Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford began acting during her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that the school was not suitable for her. Ford then applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate began her TV debut in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
